Air Quality Alert Issued In RI Amid Sweltering Temperatures

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management issued the alert for Washington and Newport counties.

As Rhode Island enters its third consecutive day of triple-digit heat indices and high humidity, the state's Department of Environmental Management issued an air quality alert for two counties Monday.

Washington and Newport counties are included in the alert, which warns of dangerously high levels of ozone buildup in the air. The southern coastline will have the highest levels, the department said, with the rest of the state at a moderate risk.

A heat advisory from the National Weather Service is in effect throughout the day Monday, with temperatures expected to peak at 94 degrees. Similarly high temperatures are expected Tuesday, with some relief in the forecast later in the week.
