Johnson, a resident of Hampton, was wanted on a warrant charging him with felony assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm in a compact area in connection with the July 19 shooting near the corner of Truman Street and Rosedale Avenue, the release said.

The night of the shooting, officers responded to a report of shots fired near the corner of Truman Street and Rosedale Avenue and found two the wounded parties, ages 22 and 25, police said.

"It was learned that Mr. Johnson may have fled to Virginia and the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force ... was contacted to assist in the search for him," the release said.

The task force "developed information that Mr. Johnson was at a residence in Newport News, Virginia," about 10 miles from Hampton, according to the release.

The Marshals captured Johnson at a home on Chestnut Avenue about 8:30 a.m., the release said.

A second suspect remains at large and the investigation is ongoing, according to the release.

"Anyone with information regarding this incident, please contact Detective Sergeant Joseph Lavallee at jlavallee@newportri.gov or call 401-845-5763," the release said.
