Today's riddle: Why did the cookie go to the hospital? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. The Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff (eastbayri.com) — Newport residents can immerse themselves in The Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff, a moving ballet performance staged throughout the historic Bellevue Avenue mansion. With a newly reimagined Second Act celebrating iconic local landmarks and traditions, this holiday favorite blends classic storytelling with distinctly Newport flair, offering a high-end, ticketed experience right in the City by the Sea.
2. 'Lady Liberty' in Equality Park (newportthisweek.com) — Newport's "Lady Liberty" statue in Equality Park is slated for a conservation assessment as part of a broader review of city memorials, and the city is inviting donations to support the work. The 1923 Spanish-American War monument, created by sculptor Christian Petersen, has become partially obscured over time but remains a powerful symbol of protection and women's strength.
3. NOAA's Atlantic fleet command moves to Newport in January; Reed tours $147M complex at Naval Station (whatsupnewp.com) — NOAA's Atlantic Marine Operations Center is officially shifting its Atlantic fleet command to Naval Station Newport, bringing dozens of shoreside jobs and more research vessels to town by early 2027. The $147 million complex will coordinate missions across the Atlantic and Great Lakes while anchoring more high-tech maritime work – a big boost to Newport's growing "blue economy" and local employment base.
4. Newport County public housing in 2025: HUD counted 944 people in reported households (southcotimes.com) — HUD data show 944 people living in 583 public housing households across Newport County in 2025, with a 93% occupancy rate and average monthly payments of $606. The report highlights modest income and rent increases from 2024 and outlines federal budget proposals and policy shifts that could influence future funding, repairs, and redevelopment of local public housing.
5. Nashville duo Golden Everything records live at Chepstow for Newport Mansions' 'Sessions' series (whatsupnewp.com) — A new "Sessions" video from the Preservation Society spotlights Nashville duo Golden Everything performing live inside Chepstow, one of Newport Mansions' lesser-known Bellevue Avenue houses. You can watch the acoustic set on the Newport Mansions YouTube channel, and Chepstow itself is slated to open on weekends during the holiday display from Nov. 21 through Jan. 3.
