Clean Ocean Access Targets Brenton Point

Clean Ocean Access (COA) performed a Coastal Cleanup at in Newport, Rhode Island on March 10^th 2012.

The team cleaned the coastline from Kings Beach Fishing area across to Brenton Point and up the coastline including Castle Hill Beach, as well as a significant amount of the park area and surrounding vegetation along the road.

A group of 42 people including two students from , two students from Wheeler School, five students from Green Team, 14 students from Portsmouth High School and residents from Jamestown, Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth and Cumberland collected over 900 pounds of trash. The haul included 19 large contractor bags containing vast amounts of fishing gear, foam, insulation, life vests, buckets, plastic bottles and plenty of random plastic pieces, including seven mangled lobster pots that were about to break apart into thousands of metal and plastic pieces.

This marks the 45^th coastal cleanup performed by Clean Ocean Access in the past 66 months and the next scheduled event is on April 14, 2012 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Ledge Road to Baileys Beach in Newport. Onemore event is scheduled for May before Clean Ocean Access takes a break and will resume activities in late September.

Clean Ocean Access is an environmental group concerned with safety, cleanliness and open access of the ocean and coastlines. The group was formed in the summer of 2006 as a result of access issues along the shoreline, water pollution at area beaches and a general interest to form a group that would work towards preserving the environment of today, for tomorrow and future generations to allow us to continue to enjoy ocean activities.
