NEWPORT, RI — Tuesday was a day of firsts for Antiques Roadshow, the popular PBS program that connects appraisers with collectors. It was the first time the show visited Newport, and it was also the first time the setting was outdoors, although part of the event took place inside Rosecliff.

Arriving with treasures and high hopes

At Rosecliff, tents were set up to shepherd the collectors through the process and thwart Jose.

Step 1: The collectors showed their antiques to be classified
Step 2. Travel to the proper tent and wait to be called for an appraisal. For some, the adventure ended there. But if the appraiser liked the item, he would pitch it to one of the producers for a television spot.
Inside Rosecliff, the people picked to be on the televised show waited for their appearance.
Outside again, collectors who weren't appraised on TV had a chance to do a spot to describe the experience.
