NEWPORT, RI — The Newport Water Division urged residents in Newport, Portsmouth and Middletown to watch out for people posing as utility workers to gain access to people's homes.
Officials with the water division said they've recently received reports from customers about being approached by people posing as water division personnel.
According to authorities, the imposters are driving vehicles marked with the Newport Water Division logo, but it's important to remember Newport Water Division employees are required to carry photo identification badges.

"While the imposters may look official, residents should make a habit of asking for identity verification from any utility worker seeking to access their homes," a spokesperson for the water division said in a statement.

Anyone who doubts a person's identity or motives is urged to call their local police department and not let the person into their home.
