Assault Suspect Restrained by Victim after Cutting Screen, Police Say

Micheal Stubbs, 32, was arrested for simple assault and vandalism Tuesday night.

Newport police charged a 32-year-old city man with vandalism and simple assault Tuesday night for allegedly ripping a screen and damaging a window box bracket outside a Prospect Hill Street apartment and then fighting with the resident who lives there.

Police said they were dispatched to he area at around 9:52 p.m. and the responding officer saw Michael Stubbs, of 23 Annandale Road, being restrained by another man who was wearing just underwear.

Police soon learned that the victim, 30, woke up to the sound of a loud bang and when he went outside to check, saw Stubbs walking away toward Bellevue asvnue.

The victim yelled at Stubbs, who turned around and started running towards the victim. He then tried to throw a few punches but the victim said he was able to restrain Stubbs in a headlock by the time police arrived

The victim suffered minor cuts and scrapes, police said.

Stubbs was verbally combative and uncooperative, according to a police report.

He was held overnight for arraignment on Wednesday.
