Follow in the footsteps of Newport’s colonial-era Jewish community and discover where congregants lived, worked, and worshiped in the 1700s. 
This guided walking tour leads you through the historic Touro Synagogue neighborhood, bringing the synagogue’s rich history to life. The tour lasts approximately one hour. August Tour Schedule: Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday @ 11:00 a.m.

Central Baptist Church

The Jamestown Chapter of Little Dresses for Africa will meet on Thursday, September 24, from 1-3 pm at Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Avenue. Sewing skills are helpful, but not necessary to turn pillowcases into dresses with simple patterns and directions. Machines, materials and guidance are provided. The non-profit Little Dresses for Africa, which has chapters in 97 countries, distributes dresses for little girls in need in Africa, Honduras, Haiti, and Guatemala. Since its founding 20 years ago, Little Dresses for Africa has distributed more than 8 million dresses sewn by volunteers around the world. The Rhode Island Slave History Medallion's mission is to highlight 
the overlooked histories of Rhode Island's free and enslaved African 
American and Indigenous communities. They produce a very popular Black 
History Walking Tour from Memorial Day weekend until the last Sunday of 
October. Join the tour director in this engaging event which brings the 
walking tour to you! If you have some mobility issues or simply want to 
learn more about how this organization started and the history of 
Newport's dominant role in the institution of slavery, you will enjoy 
this opportunity.&nbsp; &nbsp;
Note: While this program is about the provided walking tour, no 
walking is happening at this event. This event is lecture style.&nbsp;

Margaret Baker has been part of the Newport community for more than 
four decades and brings deep historical knowledge and lived experience 
to her role as a public historian with Rhode Island Slave History 
Medallions (RISHM). A former student at the University of Iowa she 
majored in Literature. She is a dedicated researcher whose work focuses 
on early Black history in Rhode Island and the state’s involvement in 
the transatlantic slave trade. 
 
Margaret joined RISHM in 2019 and contributes to the organization’s 
mission of installing bronze medallions at sites connected to enslaved 
and formerly enslaved individuals. She also serves as Tour Director for 
the Newport Black History Walking Tour, an eight‑stop educational 
experience in Newport’s Historic District. The tour has been widely 
praised by visitors from across the country and continues to foster 
understanding, empathy, and community learning.

The Butts Hill Fort Restoration Committee (BHFRC) of the Battle of Rhode Island Association (BoRIA) will hold a wreath-laying ceremony with a musket salute on the 248th anniversary of the Battle of Rhode Island on Saturday, August 29th at 6:30 PM at Butts Hill Fort in Portsmouth, RI. We take this moment to remember and reflect on the events of that day in 1778. The ceremony will end at 7:00 PM. The public is invited and parking will be available at the Wealth Management lot on the top of Dyer Street off Sprague Street and the Portsmouth High School tennis courts.
The battle was tactically inconclusive, with both sides suffering significant casualties, but it ultimately ended with the British maintaining control of Aquidneck Island. Most historians call it a “stalemate.” Butts Hill Fort was the headquarters of patriot forces under the command of General John Sullivan.
Casualties (approximate): American – 30 killed, 137 wounded, and 44 missing.
British, Hessian and Loyalists – 38 killed, 210 wounded, and 12 missing.

In honor of the Kennedys' 73rd wedding anniversary, one can re-live that special day, September 
12, 1953, when Jacqueline Bouvier married then-Senator John F. Kennedy 
at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newport. 
The&nbsp;Return to Camelot
 presentation at 12:00 noon on Saturday, September 12 features vintage film clips, a live performance of 
 organ music and hymns from the wedding ceremony, and the "first dance" 
played at the reception at Hammersmith Farm, Jackie’s childhood summer 
 home in Newport.
After the presentation, which runs approximately 45 minutes, visitors are invited to tour the church, view pew #10—where Jack and Jackie once prayed while attending Mass—and see the original kneelers used during their nuptial Mass.
• Reservations for Return to Camelot are not required. • Doors open at 11:45 am • A free-will offering will benefit the St. Mary’s Hot Lunch Program, which serves community members in need on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesdays of each month. • Free parking is available in the church lots accessed via William Street, which runs 1-way down the hill from Bellevue Avenue. • Accessible parking is located in the lot on the right side of William Street, adjacent to the former school building. • The accessible entrance to the church and accessible restrooms are via the breezeway, located between the rectory and the garage. About the book:
In the serene town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Lily Webb is deeply 
in love with a charismatic boy, a college-bound quarterback whose 
spectacular athletic talents are matched only by his fierce devotion.

About the author:
Debra Curtis is a retired professor of cultural anthropology at Salve

Newport Classical Recital Hall
