Written by Drama Desk Award winner Benjamin Scheuer (“The Lion”) and humorist-songwriter Simon Scheuer, STUPID is a romantic comedy about Agnes and Ferdinand who are geniuses - but when they meet one another, things get stupid! •  A LIFE WORTH LIVING by Jeffery Chen. A story about high school senior Gavin Zhou who involuntarily lands himself in a residential treatment facility where, he must confront the grief, guilt, and broken relationships he’s been running from. ABOUT NEWPORT NEWWORKS: The Newport NewWorks Musical Theater Festival is dedicated to providing a nurturing and creative space for both emerging and established artists to develop and refine their work-in-progress musicals. Each summer, we bring together a diverse group of artists for a two-week residency focused on collaboration, innovation, and artistic growth in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island. The residency is focused on the development of specific new musicals selected through a rigorous application process. The festival culminates in public workshop performances of the works where audiences get a rare glimpse of the heart of the creative process.

Loeb Visitors Center at Touro Synagogue National Historic Site, 52 Spring St, Newport, RI, 02840

Follow in the footsteps of Newport’s colonial-era Jewish community and discover where congregants lived, worked, and worshiped in the 1700s. 
This guided walking tour leads you through the historic Touro Synagogue neighborhood, bringing the synagogue’s rich history to life. The tour lasts approximately one hour. July Tour Schedule: Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday @ 10:00 a.m. 
GUEST INFORMATION: •&nbsp;Tours are limited to 18 people. • Tour Fee is $18 per person • Reservations are requested • The tour fee is paid for in person at the Loeb Visitors Center via card or cash (no online payments). •&nbsp;Walks may be canceled without advance notice due to inclement weather.

The Breakers

After a sold-out Newport Classical debut in 2024, Trio Karénine returns to Newport for their first performance at The Breakers mansion. Praised by Newport Classical patrons as “one of the top performances I have seen” and for defining “what chamber music is all about,” the Paris-based trio is celebrated for its extraordinary cohesion and precision. Founded in Paris in 2009, Trio Karénine has appeared in many of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the Frick Collection in New York. Acclaimed for their imaginative interpretations of the classical canon, the trio presents a program featuring works by Rimski-Korsakov, Saint-Saëns, and Tchaikovsky.

From July 2-19, 2026, the Newport Classical Music Festival will again turn this “City by the Sea” into a summer destination for music lovers, featuring 30 concerts across 11 unforgettable venues, from cliffside lawns to gilded mansions, including the stunning interiors of The Breakers, The Elms, Castle Hill Inn, Blithewold Mansion, Rosecliff Mansion, Redwood Library and Athenæum, and more. For 57 years, Newport Classical has showcased classical music as a living art form, presenting artists and programs that are diverse and ever-evolving in intimate and iconic venues that make every performance one of a kind.

Highlights of the 2026 Festival include Opening Night with chamber orchestra Delirium Musicum; a celebration of the Golden Age of Opera with Lawrence Brownlee and Erin Morley; solo piano performances by Michelle Cann and Dmitry Shishkin, and a two-piano recital with Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy; a new work by Vivian Fung, co-commissioned by Newport Classical, with Sandbox Percussion and violinist Kristin Lee; performances by violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing, VOCES8, Apollo’s Fire, Beijing Guitar Duo, Parker Quartet, and more; two evenings with Broadway star Jeremy Jordan; and Closing Night with the GRAMMY Award-winning Harlem Quartet.Admission: $50 - $200

Premiere of Documentary Film: “1778: Battle of Rhode Island” This 18-minute film will be shown before Christian McBurney’s talk at the Portsmouth Historical Society. The film was funded by the BoRIA, RI250 Commission, and the Pappito Opportunity Fund. It was produced by Fresh LLC and ParMedia.

The film traces Rhode Island’s path from a colony anchored by the bustling seaport of Newport and the communities around Narragansett Bay to a society transformed by the American Revolution. Beginning before the British occupation, it highlights a thriving Newport and Narragansett Bay, where intense Atlantic trade collides with rising tensions with the Crown. As British troops seize Newport and Aquidneck Island, the story moves into years of occupation and upheaval—fortified streets, divided neighbors, and the 1778 Battle of Rhode Island that brings the war directly to Aquidneck Island. Featured are the contributions of the First Rhode Island (Black) Regiment, a unique Continental regiment of formerly enslaved men who gained their freedom by enlisting, and bravely fighting, for the duration of the war. This battle marked the first engagement of the American and French alliance, which was key to the Revolution's victory.
The film relies heavily on McBurney’s book, The Rhode Island Campaign: The First French and American Operation in the Revolutionary War. Narration is by Michelle Girasole, Christian McBurney, Rebecca Sattel, and Jim Stearns.
The Col. Burton C. Quist Lecture Series: Christian McBurney: Causes of the American Revolution
On Thursday July 16th at 6:30 PM, the BoRIA alongside our partner the Portsmouth Historical Society (PHS) present the annual Col. Burton C. Quist Lecture Series at the PHS Museum, 870 East Main Rd. in Portsmouth. This year, historian and author, Christian McBurney will present "Causes of the American Revolution: Why did the thirteen colonies declare their independence 250 years ago?" Yes, “no taxation without representation” was a real thing, but there was much more too. This talk is intended to address the underlying causes of the American Revolution by looking at political, economic, social, demographic, geographical, immigration, racial, and ideological factors.
Christian McBurney is the author of eleven books, six on the American Revolutionary War and nine on Rhode Island (four are on both). His next book will be on Rhode Island's "Black Regiment." He is also the editor and publisher of a leading Rhode Island history blog at smallstatebighistory.com. Christian resides with his wife near Bethesda, Maryland, and they have a second home in West Kingston, Rhode Island.
This talk is our fourth annual under the banner of “The Col. Burton C. Quist Lecture Series”, in memory of our late founding Director, friend, and mentor who passed away in January, 2023. This event is free and open to the public and will be filmed for our website and YouTube channel.
