The Museum of Newport Irish History Interpretive Center is open for the 2026 Season, through October 26.&nbsp;&nbsp;Stop in today!
Public hours are 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, through the last Sunday in October (closed Monday–Wednesday).
Visitors to the Center will learn about Irish immigration to Newport
County from the colonial era to the present, and about the many
contributions made to our community by individuals of Irish descent.
Interpretive Center exhibits—including maps, models, photographs, and artifacts—are organized around several key aspects of life in the local Irish community.
Our newest exhibit, unveiled in 2025, is an interactive digital display titled “Tracing the Tides.” This experience allows visitors to delve more deeply into the lives of Newport’s Irish immigrants through a rich, multi-layered narrative, illustrated with historic photos and other images—many of which were not previously available to the public.
Visitor Information: •The Center is located on Thames Street, just south of Narragansett Ave. •Free parking is available on the street. •Admission is free for members of the Museum and by donation for others.&nbsp; • If research assistance is required, visitors are advised to make an appointment by writing <a href="mailto:NewportIrishHistory@gmail.com">NewportIrishHistory@gmail.com</a>
Note: Private visits outside of regular hours, including during the off-season, may be arranged with advance notice so we might secure a docent.&nbsp; To inquire, please email:&nbsp;<a href="mailto:NewportIrishHistory@gmail.com" target="_blank">NewportIrishHistory@gmail.com</a> Celebrating 30 Years in 2026 The Museum of Newport Irish History, a volunteer-driven, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1996 and now boasts over 900 members. In addition to operating the Interpretive Center, the organization sponsors&nbsp;numerous educational, cultural, social, and fundraising events throughout the year, including the popular <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/lectures/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Annual Lecture Series</a>, which has just completed its 24th season. The organization also restored and maintains the <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/historic-cemetery-tours/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">historic Barney Street Cemetery</a> at the corner of Barney and Mt. Vernon Streets, steps from Washington Square. It is the final resting place of many of Newport’s earliest Irish residents. The cemetery was established to support Rhode Island’s first Roman Catholic parish (est. 1828), the forerunner of the current St. Mary’s Church at the corner of Spring Street and Memorial Boulevard. Saint Mary's Catholic Church - Spring Street & Memorial Blvd. West, Newport

St. Mary's Church, Newport, invites community members and their animal companions to our fourth annual "Blessing of the Animals" on Sunday, October 4, at 12:30 p.m. This event commemorates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, which falls on October 4. The
individual animal blessings will take place outdoors, in the courtyard on
the William Street side of the church, accessed from Spring Street.
All animals must be leashed or in a pet carrier. Thank you for your cooperation.
Cider, donuts, and coffee will be served.&nbsp; Pet treats available for animal companions.
Participants are asked to bring a pet food item that will be donated to the <a href="https://potterleague.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Potter League for Animals</a>.
The event will be canceled if the weather is inclement. No rain date. About Parking Plenty
of free parking is available in the church's parking lots on William
Street, which runs one way downhill from Bellevue Avenue. Parking is
also available in the church's lot on Fair Street. Fair Street runs one
way from
Thames Street to Spring Street. Access Fair Street by taking an
immediate left off Thames Street, just south of the Americas Cup and
Memorial Boulevard West intersection. Use the lot on the right side of
Fair Street (when facing the Spring Street entrance to the church), not

About St. Mary's Church The parish was established
in 1828 to serve Newport's growing population of Catholics, many of whom
were Irish immigrants working on the construction of nearby<a href="https://fortadams.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"> Fort Adams</a>. The congregation soon outgrew its first two buildings, which were located at <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/press/newports-early-irish-community-where-it-all-began/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Barney &amp; Mt. Vernon Streets</a>,
a short stroll from Washington Square. The Gothic Revival style
building you see today at the corner of Spring Street and Memorial
Boulevard West was designed by Irish-American architect, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Keely" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Patrick C. Keely</a>. Construction began in August 1848, and in July 1852, the building was dedicated to "The Holy Name of Mary, Our Lady of the Isle."
Future president, John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, whose
mother and stepfather summered in Newport, were married here on
September 12, 1953. Saint Mary's was designated a National Historic
Shrine in 1968 and it was added to the National Register of Historic
Places in 2008. Today, <a href="https://www.stmarynewportri.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Saint Mary'</a>s is a vibrant Catholic faith
community of approximately 1,200 families led by Fr. Mark A. Sauriol,
who is also pastor of nearby <a href="https://www.staugustinnewport.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Saint Augustin's Parish</a>.
