NEWPORT, RI — The City of Newport is asking for the public's help in making this year's Fourth of July fireworks show a reality. Residents and businesses are encouraged to donate to the city's Fireworks Fund, which pays for the annual Independence Day tradition.

Last week, the City Council unanimously voted to approve a three-year contract with Pyrotecnico, Inc., ensuring the ongoing success of the fireworks show, which is the focal point of the city's Fourth of July festivities. With this year's holiday falling on a Saturday, city officials expect a larger-than-usual crowd.

Newport Mayor Jaime Bova said the fireworks are made possible by donations from local businesses, ranging from $50 to $5,000.

"Newport’s Fourth of July fireworks display is a wonderful tradition in our community, and it wouldn’t exist without community support," Bova said. "We’re hoping to make this year’s celebration one to remember and are asking anyone interested in contributing to please consider making a donation so that we can continue to light up the sky."

Once a small effort organized by a group of volunteers, the show is now a community-wide effort, city officials said. Since 2006, the city has been in charge of the display.
