Coronavirus In Newport: Changes Made To Food Distribution Program
Attendees are asked to provide proof of Newport residency.
NEWPORT, RI — The city of Newport has made changes to its drive-up food distribution site due to high demand. Drivers are asked to bring proof of residency to the weekly pickup.
Groceries will be distributed to residents on Wednesdays until April 29. The drive-through and walk-up site is open 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot across from Pell Elementary School at 35 Dexter Street.
The first week had higher-than-expected demand, the city said. Starting this week, attendees are asked to bring a proof of Newport residency, such as a current vehicle registration, driver's license, lease agreement or bill from the city.

Volunteers will direct drivers and pedestrians to tents, where someone will load the packages of food into the trunk of the vehicle or the person's cart. Each vehicle or cart will receive one week's worth of food for each person in the household. For safety reasons, drivers are asked not to get out of their cars.
All volunteers will be screened for symptoms of the coronavirus before handling any food. Anyone with questions can call 401-845-5501.
