Coronavirus In Newport: Stay Safe On The Cliff Walk

Avoid walking in groups and stay fix feet away from others when using the Cliff Walk and other public areas in Newport.

NEWPORT, RI — Newport city officials are reminding residents to be aware and use best social distancing practices when at the Cliff Walk or other popular public areas. The Cliff Walk Commission released a list of recommendations for safe use of the popular coastal trail.

When out in public, including when using parks or walking on trails, don't travel in groups. Newport police will be patrolling popular areas and will break up groups of 10 people or more. Maintain a distance of six feet or more between yourself and other walkers. If you have a dog, keep it on a leash and always clean up waste.

To avoid accidentally transmitting the virus on surfaces, the bathrooms at 40 Steps will be closed until further notice, the commission said. In addition, carry out any trash to avoid touching the handles on trash receptacles, and littering could also inadvertently carry the virus, along with being bad for the environment.

Finally, residents are asked not to pick the daffodils that are currently blooming along the Cliff Walk and throughout the city. Although this year's Daffodil Festival was canceled due to COVID-19, the flowers are still popping up as a sign of spring around the city.

"They're for everyone to enjoy. This year, more than others, we're hoping they'll help bring a bit of joy to those who pass by," the commission said.
