Dig Into Newport's Past Through Common Burying Ground Tours
Newport's Historic Cemetery Advisory Commission will hold tours of the historic cemetery every weekend this summer.
NEWPORT, RI — Immerse yourself in history this summer by exploring one of Rhode Island's oldest cemeteries. Every Saturday, volunteers from Newport's Historic Cemetery Advisory Commission will hold tours of the Common Burying Ground, starting June 29.
The guided tours will center around some of the oldest stones carved in the 1700s, many of which were made at teh John Stevens Shop on nearby Thames Street, as well as God's Little Acre, the largest group of African American gravestones in Colonial New England and information about the city's work to preserve and restore the historic graveyard.
Tour groups will leave from the Warner Street entrance at Burnside Avenue at 10 a.m., running every Saturday from June 29 through August.
