Diver Dies after Equipment Failure Near Ida Lewis

A 58-year old Middletown man has died after his equipment failed in waters near Ida Lewis Yacht Club on Father’s Day Sunday.

Members of the Newport Fire Department, Newport police and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene and the man was transported to Newport Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Two bystanders saw the diver in the water, according to reports, and helped responders at the scene.

The diver reportedly had not been heard from for about an hour before police and fire officials responded.

Emergency personnel administered CPR at the scene and during the transport to the hospital.

The man has not been identified.
