On the evening of Wednesday, April 18, IYRS will host a special Admissions Open House for High School students. The event—which takes place at the school’s 5,000-square-foot facility in Bristol—is targeted to High School students and their parents who want to learn about training and career opportunities for individuals who like to work with their hands.
“In the industries we serve, the workforce is definitely graying,” says Susan Daly of IYRS. “Young people with mechanical or technical aptitude are in great demand…Our Open House is designed to answer the questions of students and their parents as they make their plans for life after High School.”
The Open House on April 18 runs from 5 pm to 7 pm at the school’s Bristol campus (253 Franklin Street, Bristol). A presentation on Financial Aid and Housing will be held at 5:30 pm. Attendees can also meet IYRS staff, learn about marketable skills that lead to career opportunities, tour the school’s facilities, and see student projects now underway.

The IYRS Admissions staff travels throughout the year to High Schools in New England and New York, and a number of young students have already made a successful transition from High School, to IYRS, to careers in the marine industry. Approximately 17% of the school’s current student body are students under the age of 20.
The IYRS Bristol Campus is home to the school's Marine Systems and Composites Technology programs—both full time programs that are six months long. In both programs, students are prepared to take national, industry recognized certification exams that are valuable credentials for job seekers. These certifications are issued by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC), the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA), and the American Composites Manufacturers Association.

Students in the IYRS Marine Systems program learn to install, maintain and troubleshoot the onboard systems used on classic and modern boats. Students in the Composites Technology Program learn hands-on skills and the theory behind the processes and applications of this fast-evolving technology; composites graduates have a wide choice of career paths since the high strength-to weight ratio of composite materials pioneered by boat builders is now in demand by many industries—including wind energy, aerospace, and transportation.
