The Newport Historical Society will host historian Matthew Keagle for Dressing Manifest Destiny, featuring 19th century men's costumes on November 13th at 2pm, at the Newport Historical Society headquarters 82 Touro Street in the restored Seventh Day Baptist Meeting House.
Mr. Keagle will talk about the origins of today's formal men's clothing and its origins in the early 19th century during a gallery talk from Dressing Manifest Destiny's guest curator Matthew Keagle. Using specific examples from the Newport Historical Society's collections, Keagle will discuss the history of men's dress starting with the late 18th century, how it changed in the early 19th century and ultimately how formalwear transitioned to reflect a version of the dress pants and suits that are worn today. He will also share his research on Newport's contribution to the clothing industry. The hour-long program will conclude with a Q&A session.
Admission costs $5 per person, $1 for Newport Historical Society members.
