Newport Lecture: McKim, Mead & White and Colonial Newport

Colonial Newport was of great inspiration to McKim, Mead & White -- the city's 18th century buildings inspired and informed the architectural vocabulary of the architects' Shingle Style and Georgian Revival buildings of the 1880s and 1890s. As they helped make Newport, it helped make them. From its Colonial background emerged the beginnings of the Colonial Revival. This talk will consider the role clients might have played along with the evolution of McKim, Mead & White's work from the Casino and the Isaac Bell House to Rosecliff. A reception will follow the lecture. More detailed information will be available on registration.
