Ex-Girlfriend to New Girlfriend? 'I Am Going to Kick the Baby Out of You'

Officers were called to Festival Field apartments on Girard Avenue Friday morning shortly after midnight for vandalism and assault.

NEWPORT, RI—Helen C. Atkins, 22, of Newport, was arrested at 1:25 Friday morning and charged with three misdemeanors: vandalism, malicious injury to property; simple assault and battery and disorderly conduct, police said.

According to the arrest report, the victim was asleep at her boyfriend's home in Festival Field apartments around midnight when she was awakened by banging at the door. When she looked out, she saw her boyfriend's ex-girl friend key her car in the parking lot.

She went outside, and Atkins allegedly shouted, "I am going to kick the baby out of you" and then threw a bottle at the victim's stomach before fleeing in a dark sedan driven by an unknown man.

The victim, who is pregnant, was taken to the hospital because she said her stomach hurt and she feared her baby might have been injured.

The boyfriend is the baby's father, she told police.

After an investigation, officers found the word "slut" had been scratched into the passenger side of the victim's car and the windshield was cracked. Police reported a small chip in the windshield with spider cracks radiating from it.

Police went to Atkins' house and waited for her. The victim's boyfriend identified Atkins for police, and she was charged.
