Fifty-Seven Arrests over St. Patrick's Day Celebrations
The rain led to a significant drop in the number of arrests as compared to last year.

Newport Police typically have one of the busiest weekends of the year during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and this year was no different with 57 arrests related to the parade and subsequent revelries.
Still, that’s a dramatic drop over last year, when police arrested 104 people and issued 91 citations.
“Obviously, the rain had a lot to do with the numbers,” said Newport Police Lt. William Fitzgerald.

This year, of the 57 arrests, three were juveniles. Twenty-two arrests were custodial arrests and alcohol related. Thirty-five were summonses of which 15 were related to alcohol, such as possession of alcohol as a minor, misrepresentation of age to procure alcohol, carrying an open container, and others. The rest of the arrests were for disorderly conduct, public urination and other crimes.
