Fire in Ahepa Apartment Knocked Down Monday

Firefighters responded to a fire inside an apartment at the Ahepa I complex on Girard Avenue.

NEWPORT, RI—A fire was discovered on Monday night inside a second-floor apartment at the Ahepa senior housing complex on Girard Avenue. According to Deputy fire Chief David Murphy, the alarm was sounded at 6:09 p.m. on Monday, while the fire department was also responding to another call at the Festival Field apartments.

The fire department was at the scene until about 7:53 p.m. No one was injured, including civilians and firefighters, and there were no pets involved in the fire.

Two engines, two ladder trucks, a rescues, and a command vehicle were part of the initial response, he said. A third engine and another rescue came later when the fire investigation at Festival Field was over.

The cause is still under investigation, and the fire marshal will be working on a determination again tomorrow, he said.
