Geminid Meteor Shower 2015 at Frosty Drew Observatory

The annual Geminid Meteor Shower peak happens overnight December 13-14, 2015 and Frosty Drew Observatory will open all night long.

On the crisp late autumn night of December 13th, 2015 the Geminid meteor shower peak comes to the skies over Frosty Drew Observatory, blazing the starscape with up to 100 meteors per hour. The Geminds are certainly one of the best (if not the best) meteor shower of the year and this year the skies are setting us up for an awesome night of shooting stars with no Moon during the entire shower. The 6% waxing crescent Moon will set at 6:43 p.m. offering super dark skies and excellent meteor viewing for the entire night.

Join Frosty Drew astronomers at the Observatory on December 13, 2015, weather permitting, to witness this spectacular event. We will open the Observatory and Sky Theatre at 6:30 p.m. In the Observatory, telescopes will showcase the night sky from 6:30 – 8:00 with views of nebulae, star clusters, and distant galaxies. After 8:30 we will all make our way outside to view the spectacular meteor shower. We may have portable telescopes available throughout the night with some great views of deep sky objects and possibly Comet Catalina. The Sky Theatre will remain open all night featuring videos and slide shows of celestial objects we have photographed at Frosty Drew Observatory.

Grab a jacket, blanket, friends and family. Dust off those binoculars and have a holiday season starter under the beautiful dark skies at Frosty Drew Observatory while Geminid meteors streak by!
