Green Scene at At Rogers High School

Rogers High School sudents Sierra Love and Laura Rossier, of the Horticulture program, planted and maintained both Boston Bib and Romaine Lettuce plants for the past month. The Horticulture classes are learning about sustainable farming during the winter in their horticulture classroom.

The plants are grown both organically and hydroponically and have grown from seed to harvestable baby lettuce leaves in about five weeks. The class helped to assemble and make the hydroponic system functional from some parts received from Salve Regina University. The students have made some small adjustments to the system and hope to have an even more successful harvest in another month or so.

The Horticulture program maintains two small hydroponic gardens and are collaborating with the Culinary Arts program at NACTC by providing them with fresh herbs and baby greens. The students hope that with some additional funding, they can expand their hydroponic gardens and then they would be able to produce edible produce year round. With an increase in the size of the system, the students hope to be able to supply food to local area food kitchens and pantries, and possibly to the school lunch programs.
