'High-Quality' Masks Needed In RI To Protect Against Coronavirus

PROVIDENCE, RI — As more contagious strains of the coronavirus circulate, Rhode Island health officials are reminding residents to not just wear masks, but make sure they're high-quality and well-fitting.

"Masks should fit snugly over the face, covering the nose, mouth and chin while remaining comfortable," said Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the director of the Rhode Island Department of Health.

The best masks are KN95s, KF95s, paper medical masks or N95s.

"If you don't have one of these masks, make sure your fabric mask is made of high-quality, tightly knit fabric," Alexander Scott said, adding that they should have at least two layers and fit snugly over the face.

As of now, more contagious coronavirus variants have not been confirmed in the state, but Alexander-Scott said it's only a matter of time, and it's very possible that they are already in circulation in Rhode Island. When residents properly wear masks, avoid social gatherings, maintain social distancing and take other safety precautions, they are helping to buy the state time to get more people vaccinated, Alexander Scott explained.

"If we can remain in this calm period until spring, that would be fantastic," she said. "[But] this could be the calm before the storm."
