NEWPORT, RI — Newport city officials are giving residents an option to give their Christmas trees back to nature by recycling them.

Christmas trees are due to be collected the second week of Jan. 9 to 13, on your normal collection day along with any other plant decorations and yard waste that you may have.

After the week of January 9-13, yard waste collection is not scheduled again until March 6 to 10.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Remove all artificial decorations such as tinsel, garland, ornaments, lights and bulbs.
  • Put your Christmas tree out on your regularly scheduled collection day by 6 a.m.
  • Please do not put trees in plastic bags.
  • No artificial trees will be collected.
