Latest Rhode Island Weather Forecast: Blizzard Warning for Smithfield & Woonsocket

The National Weather Service cancelled the blizzard watch for most of Rhode Island. But Smithfield & Woonsocket remains under a warning.

NEWPORT, RI—Woonsocket and Northern Rhode Island remained under a blizzard warning, as of 11 p.m. Monday. But for much of the day, the storm tracked west, and the National Weather Service at 3:46 a.m. Monday cancelled the blizzard watch for East Greenwich, Newport, Narragansett. By afternoon, the blizzard watch for Coventry and Providence was lifted. A winter storm warning is in effect for the rest of the state, except Block Island, which is under a winter weather advisory.

For the coast, damaging winds and coastal flooding are likely on Tuesday, the National Weather Service says. "Heavy snow is also likely Tuesday morning before mixing with and possibly changing to rain."

Coastal flooding could also be a factor, especially in Narragansett and South Kingstown, but not in Newport. For Narragansett and SK, the coastal flood advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday for entire Washington County shoreline. A storm surge around two feet is likely to occur with a few hours of the high tide in the mid to late morning. Some flooding and some erosion is possible.

In a best case scenario, Narragansett, Newport and the coast could wind up with as little as three inches of snow, but eight to 12 inches are likely.
