Mailman Didn't Ring Twice In Newport?

A mix-up with mail delivery in Newport ended in one man chasing his neighbor with a baseball bat.

NEWPORT, RI — When the postal carrier kept leaving a Newport woman's mail at the next door apartment, she made a sign and attached it to her letter box. The sign advised the mailman that her apartment's box was on the opposite side. He should leave her mail in that box. However, before the letter carrier could read the note, the other neighbor removed it.

The woman posted a second note to the same effect. At that point, her neighbor rang her bell and confronted her about it. There was an argument. The neighbor had misread the note and thought it said she and her husband were stealing the mail, police said later. Then, the neighbor's husband arrived, heard about the argument and allegedly went after the neighbor with a small baseball bat.

"You talk s--t to my wife, I'm going to (expletive) you up," he allegedly said. His wife went out and took the baseball bat away from him and made him come back in their house.
