Man Arrested For Lying Down On Broadway Sidewalk and Refusing to Get Up

Police said Brennan T. Shannon refused repeated requests to get up and was arrested for disorderly conduct on Thursday.

Newport Police charged 45-year-old Brennan T. Shannon of Newport with disorderly conduct Thursday right before noon for allegedly lying on the sidewalk in front of 175 Broadway and refusing to get up.

“Nope. I’m not getting up,” Shannon told police as they asked him repeatedly to get up, according to a police report.

An officer on patrol at 11:35 a.m. reported seeing a man on the sidewalk with his arms out.

“This is a heavily traveled area among pedestrians, especially during the daytime hours,” the officer reported.

Shannon, who has no permanent address, reportedly had many opportunities to get up but refused.

He was taken into custody without incident and was later released on $1,000 surety bail. He was released on Friday morning and ordered to obtain alcohol treatment services until he returns to court on April 21 for a violation hearing.
