Man Shot Outside Newport Apartment Building

Police arrested a 20-year-old Newport man who was carrying a handgun near the scene of the shooting.

A 23-year-old Middletown man was shot three times in the legs outside the Bayside Village apartment complex in Newport on Tuesday and is being treated at Rhode Island Hospital, Newport police said.

Police also have a 20-year-old Newport man in custody for possessing a gun, cocaine and marijuana near the scene of the shooting, though police said they’re still investigating whether the gun was involved in the shooting.

Newport Police Sgt. Jonathan Cortes said that the victim was shot at around 9:20 p.m. outside the apartment complex, located at 143 Third Street.

Police got several 911 calls reporting gunfire and found the victim outside building No. 6 with wounds to his lower legs.

He was transported to Newport Hospital and then Rhode Island Hospital.

Elija D. Weeden, of 10 Gould St., Newport, was arrested nearby during the investigation, Cortes said. He was carrying a gun and “the Criminal Investigation Division is continuing this active investigation to determine if the handgun recovered from Weeden was involved in the shooting,” Cortes said.

All told, Weeden is facing charges of possession of a handgun without a license, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, cocaine possession and possession of marijuana.
