Meet Rhode Island's Richest Resident

Forbes identified the richest person in each state. They may not come as a surprise.

Forbes analyzed the fortunes of the country’s richest people to identify each state’s wealthiest person. This is the magazine’s fifth edition of the list.

Rhode Island's richest resident is Jonathan Nelson, founder and CEO of Providence Equity Partners, who is worth $1.8 billion, according to Forbes. Nelson launched the private equity firm in 1989 and has invested in more than 180 companies, selling the Ironman triathlon series in 2015 for $900 million. He is on the governing board of his business school alma mater, Brown University, where he studied economics before earning an MBA from Harvard.

The net worth of the individuals on the list varies. For example, Washington is home to the world's two richest and most recognizable billionaires; Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, but in certain states, the richest people only had a nine-figure net worth, Forbes writes.

Collectively, the wealthy on the Forbes list had a net worth of $875 billion, which the magazine says set a new record.
