Middletown Group Home Child Charged At Newport Hospital

The child allegedly assaulted a hospital staff member, but Newport police questioned why the group home sent her without an escort.

NEWPORT, RI— A juvenile from a Middletown group home is facing three counts of Simple Assault or Battery after she allegedly spit at and struck a hospital worker. The incident happened Aug. 7 at 1:20 a.m. at Newport Hospital. According to the arrest report, the juvenile, whose age was not listed, was sent to the hospital for a mental breakdown. However, police questioned why she had not been accompanied by an escort, which is the usual practice. Now she is facing criminal charges.

Middletown police said the group home told them no escort was necessary, Newport police said, and the group home said there had been a miscommunication.
