Napolitano's Ousted: Newport Will Have a New Mayor
Harry Winthrop has collected the votes to be Newport's new mayor, Councilor John Florez confirmed.
NEWPORT, RI – Harry Winthrop will be Newport's new mayor, Councilor John Florez confirmed. Winthrop, the former mayor, was the top vote-getter in the Nov. 8 election. He has collected enough support from the other councilors to take over.
He will oust Jeanne Marie Napolitano, who took over as mayor two years ago when Winthrop was defeated.
Napolitano and Winthrop lobbied for the mayor's job, councilors confirmed.

The formal election is set for Nov. 16. The council-elect will meet at 5 p.m. to elect Winthrop and choose a solicitor. Another meeting follows at 6:30 p.m. The Comprehensive Plan is on the agenda.
