New York Man Accused Of Sexual Assault In Newport

NEWPORT, RI — A New York man was indicted in connection to a sexual assault that took place in Newport in December 2021, Attorney General Peter Neronha said Friday,

On Feb. 27, a Rhode Island Grand Jury returned a secret indictment charging Julian John, 22, of Yonkers, New York, with one count of first-degree sexual assault.

Prosecutors said the sexual assault happened sometime on Dec. 5, 2021. The Newport Police Department conducted the investigation.

On Tuesday, the secret indictment was unsealed, and John was arraigned in Newport County Superior Court. The defendant is scheduled for a pretrial conference in Newport County Superior Court on May 12.
