Newport Bridge Project Humming Along Despite Traffic Problems

The project is on schedule, despite bad weather, officials say.

NEWPORT, RI — Drivers may be tired of all the delays on the Newport Pell Bridge. But according to The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, the construction is going well. Weather caused a one-day delay earlier, but the project has stayed on schedule.

"The hydro-demolition work has been successful and is going smoothly," the authority said. "The contractor has removed the concrete deck down to the rebar (steel supporting bars embedded in the concrete). The enclosed photos show the work in progress and the magnitude of the work taking place.

Impact on traffic is a continuing problem at rush hour. But RITBA maintains delays at other times of the day are minimal, and no delays are occurring in the evening. The authority "urges people to continue to travel to Aquidneck Island and enjoy the beaches, landmarks, restaurants and businesses that Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport have to offer."
