Updated: Newport Bridge Reopened After Multi-Vehicle Accident
The bridge was closed by state police earlier due to an accident in the westbound lane.
NEWPORT, RI — Two accidents on the Newport Pell Bridge around noon sent three people to the hospital with "minor injuries," state police said.
The first accident involved six cars, and then a second 2-car accident occurred. The second accident happened as a result of the first pileup, police said.
The accidents happened on the westbound side, but the bridge had to be closed for about 30 minutes, while rescue workers responded and police cleared the scene, according to the state Turnpike and Bridge Authority.
