Newport City, State Lawmakers Holding Annual Workshop

NEWPORT, RI — Newport city councilmembers are set to meet with their state counterparts this weekend. The annual workshop allows the lawmakers to discuss Newport's priorities in the current legislative session.

The workshops are open to the public and will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with a city council workshop. At 10 a.m., the council will meet with the General Assembly delegation. Both meetings will be held at Newport City Hall in the second-floor city council chamber. Residents who cannot attend can stream the workshop live on the city's website.

This year's workshop will include discussion of the feasibility of a local homestead exemption, taxes related to short-term rentals, school funding, the planned Pell Bridge realignment project, 2020 census and reimbursement from National Grid for last year's week-long gas outage on Aquidneck Island.
