NEWPORT, RI — A Newport couple is facing charges after being accused of leaving a toddler home alone, according to reports. Lazaro O. Shemeley, 37, and Leah Shemeley, 25, were both charged with cruelty or neglect to a child, according to The Newport Daily News.
According to The Newport Daily News, Ms. Shemeley reported that she left the two-year-old boy with a babysitter on Friday so she could attend the arraignment of Mr. Shemeley for an unrelated domestic disorderly conduct charge. Around the same time, police received a call of a crying baby who had been left alone. Shemeley said she would go home immediately.
Both are being held at the ACI after they failed to make bail. Neither entered a plea at their arraignment and both were ordered not to have contact with the child, The Newport Daily News reported.
