Newport Man Charged with Domestic Assault for Hitting Woman in Face: Police

Police said Erich Raney Schoen, 29, claimed he hit the woman in self defense.

Newport Police charged Erich Raney Schoen, 29, of 11 West Extension St., Newport with domestic simple assault early Sunday morning after he allegedly struck a woman in the face during an argument.

Police said they were dispatched to a city address at about 2:05 a.m. after dispatchers got a 911 hangup call.

Dispatchers reported hearing a woman crying before the call disconnected.

Police said the woman suffered a laceration above her eye and was transported to Newport Hospital for treatment.

Schoen told police that he was defending himself when he struck the victim, but police determined that he was the primary aggressor after an investigation.

Along with the domestic simple assault charge, a no-contact order was filed.

Schoen was released on $1,000 surety bail and is due to return to court on Wednesday.
