Newport Man Hospitalized After Falling Off Scooter

A witness said a man was drinking from a can of Monster when his scooter hit the curb near the Coggeshall School on Van Zandt Avenue.

NEWPORT, RI — A man fell off a scooter near the Coggeshall School on Van Zandt on Monday at 5:53 a.m. A witness saw him riding while drinking from a can of Monster, an energy drink. He drifted over and hit the curb. The rider fell off the scooter. The scooter then crashed about 15 feet away from his body. He lay motionless on the road and was bleeding from the face, according to the accident report.

Police identified him from his Guatemalan identification card. His name is not being released. He regained consciousness and was taken to the emergency room at Newport Hospital, where doctors decided to admit him. Officers tried to contact family members but were unsuccessful, police said.
