Newport Man Ran Down Thames Street & Threw Himself on Moving Car: Police Say

Julio A. Jolon, 22, allegedly ignored a police officer who tried to stop him when he ran down the middle of Thames Street Friday morning.

NEWPORT, RI—Around 1:17 a.m. Friday, Julio A. Jolon, 22, ran from Cotton Court down the middle of Thames Street into the path of an oncoming car, police allege. A Newport police officer saw him when the car was about 25 feet in the distance and shouted to Jolon to move out of the street. But Jolon kept running South on Thames and leapt onto the car's hood, police said.

The driver, who later told police he didn't know Jolon, slowed down and tried to pull over. Jolon fell off but ran beside the car. Then he grabbed the passenger side mirror and held on while the car dragged him along Thames Street. The driver ultimately stopped. Jolon jumped back on the hood, lay on his stomach, kicked his feet and punched the windshield. He was charged with Vandalism, malicious injury to property; Disorderly conduct; and Obstructing a street, highway, or sidewalk, all misdemeanors. Police gave him a court date and a summons.
