Newport Police Arrest 14 After Concluding Nine-Month Drug Sweep

The Newport Police Department concluded a nine-month undercover operation to get drugs off the streets of the city.

The Vice and Narcotics Unit, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency, has wrapped up a nine-month-long undercover investigation on street level drug dealing, police officials said Tuesday.

The undercover operation led to police obtaining 20 arrest warrants for individuals suspected of dealing crack cocaine, cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy.  They have arrested 14 suspects so far, the majority of them Newport residents. Individuals arrested include:

  • Julius Taylor, 22, 782 River Avenue, Providence: Four Counts Delivery “Crack” cocaine 
  • Nikia Stallworth, 31, 238 Hillside Avenue, Newport: One Count Delivery “Crack” cocaine, One Count Delivery of Marijuana 
  • Brad Hall, DOB: 19, 195 Admiral Kalbfus Road, Newport: Two Counts Delivery “Crack” cocaine 
  • Jose Jackson, 19, 143 Third Street Apt. 4D, Newport: Four Counts Delivery “Crack” cocaine 
  • Crystal DeJesus, 21, 90 Girard Avenue Apt. 50, Newport: One Count Delivery “Crack” cocaine 
  • Peter Maloney, 23, 133 Park Holm, Newport: Three Counts Delivery Marijuana
  • Ashley Anderson, 50, 90 Girard Avenue Apt. 179, Newport: Two Counts Delivery “Crack” cocaine, Two Counts Delivery Marijuana, Two Counts of Conspiracy
  • Calvin Zeigler, 27, 39 Farewell Street, Newport: Three Counts Delivery “Crack” cocaine 
  • Gabriel Torres, 21, 141 Third Street 8F, Three Counts Delivery “Crack” cocaine 
  • Angel Shuttlesworth, 25, 1659 West Main Road, Middletown: Two Counts Delivery Marijuana
  • Manuel Stedford, 27, 33 Chapel Terrace, Newport: One Count Delivery “Crack” Cocaine 
  • Troy Barnes, 38, 380 New York Avenue, Providence: Two Counts Delivery “Crack” cocaine  
  • Derek Rivera, 23: Arrested on unrelated Warrant for Failure to Appear/Ability to Pay  
  •  Cathy Saunders, 47, 244 Park Holm, Newport: Two counts Delivery “Crack” Cocaine

According to Lt. William Fitzgerald, last weeks' arrest of was not connected to this undercover operation. All those arrested will be arraigned on Jan. 18, at Second Division District Court in Newport. This investigation is ongoing. Check back to Patch for updates.
