Newport Police Arrest 5 In Connection With Stolen Car

Two 16-year-old suspects went to the Training School for Youth on Friday morning, and three adults were charged with stealing a car.

NEWPORT, RI — Police around 1 a.m. Friday spotted a silver Honda, which was traveling the wrong way in reverse on Memorial Boulevard near Cliff Avenue. A man without a shirt was walking along the sidewalk. When he saw police, he jumped into the Honda, and the driver sped off towards Easton's Beach. Officers stopped the car in front of the beach.

Police allege the driver, Nadia McDermott, 20, of Fall River, Mass., told the officers she did not have a driver's license, registration or proof of insurance. However, police saw the registration in the glove compartment. It came back to a car reported stolen from New Bedford, Mass. McDermott told police the car belonged to her mother's friend. But when police contacted the mother, she said the car did not belong to any of her friends.

Four other people were in the car, including Kevin Edwards, 18, of Fall River, Mass., the man who jumped into the car. The others were Jose Ferrer, 18, of New Bedford, and two 16-year-old juveniles. One juvenile is from New Bedford, and the other is from Fall River. All were charged at 2 a.m. with felony possession of a stolen auto, parts. The juveniles' names are not being released due to their age. They were taken to the Rhode Island Training School for Youth. The adults were taken to the Newport police station.
