Newport Police Investigating Officer-Involved-Violence Caught On Video

A video of the incident​ appears to show a uniformed police officer push one man and strike another in the face.

NEWPORT, RI — An incident involving police turned violent in Newport over the weekend and resulted in the department investigating one of its officers.

A video of the Thames Street incident appears to show a uniformed police officer push one man, forcing another to fall to the ground. The video also shows one man being thrown into a pole. The video appears to also show the officer strike a man in the face before tackling him to the ground.

"The department is aware of the incident and subsequent video. The department is reviewing the matter," Newport Police Lt. April Amaral said in an email.

Police said the incident with Newport police happened around 1:20 a.m. Sunday near the Blues Club and Santander Bank on Thames Street. Amaral said two men from Newport were arrested.

The men were both 22 and were charged with obstruction and resisting arrest. Another one of the men was also charged with disorderly conduct.
