Newport Police Launch Package Theft Prevention Program

NEWPORT, RI — Are you worried about porch pirates stealing your packages this holiday season? If you have a home security system, Newport police can help prevent that.

For a second year, the Newport Police Department launched its voluntary community security camera program. Any residents with home security systems or a video doorbell has the option of registering it with Newport police.

Police said registering your cameras can be helpful to law enforcement in investigating package theft and other neighborhood crimes.

Registration in the program is voluntary and may be canceled at any time. Police said personal information is also kept strictly confidential by the city, and there is no cost associated to participate.
