Newport Police Log: Portsmouth Man Arrested for Breaking and Entering

A look at recent police activity around the city.

Bryan J. Newbold, 25, of 203 Railroad Ave., Portsmouth, was arrested around 7:39 p.m. on Monday for breaking and entering.

Police were dispatched to 9 Gould St. for a breaking and entering report. They stopped and detained Newbold, who said he was not involved.

The victim told police the door to her apartment had been kicked and she suspected Newbold. According to reports, she said she entered the common hallway and saw Newbold acting suspiciously outside her door. When she asked what he was doing, he told her he was looking for “Mike” because he owed him money. She told him to look upstairs since no “Mike” lived in the building.

She said after she left the apartment she heard yelling from upstairs and saw two men running down the steps of the building.

Other witnesses told police they saw two men kick in the door. The victim said her purse was missing, but nothing else was taken.

Officers located Newbold, where he was handcuffed, transported and booked.

Police have not located the other suspect.

Two Minors Arrested for Breaking and Entering

A 17-year-old Newport resident and a 17-year-old Providence resident were both arrested around 3:07 a.m. on Tuesday for breaking and entering and obstructing an officer. The Providence resident was also a missing juvenile.

Police patrolling Broadway noticed two men dressed in all black exit the alcove to the front door of Esperanto at 316 Broadway, which had recently been broken into. According to reports, they were holding black bags and immediately started running away from police. They were stopped by an officer before running away again.

During a search, an officer saw a backpack protruding from a bush. After further inspection, he found the Newport resident hiding. He was handcuffed.

Police found a brick on the floor of the store and the glass door shattered. Video surveillance later showed the two entering through the glass and placing items into a backpack.

The Providence suspect said he only broke the glass and took a pack of gum. He told police that he went in because he was hungry. Officers found a dropped trash bag in the store with boxes of frozen food.

The Newport resident was transported to the station and booked.
