Newport Police Remove Suspected Bomb From Home

A woman told police she found a device in the basement that looked like a pipe bomb.

NEWPORT, RI — A well-being check at a Newport home ended up being anything but routine , when police said they discovered what appeared to be a bomb inside the home.

Just after 7:30 p.m., Thursday, police were called to a home on Kay Street for a report of a man who was threatening to harm himself. When officers arrived, they tried to contact Ryan Chaves, 26, but he ran away, police told WPRI 12.

Officers then spoke to a woman who said there was a device in the basement that looked like a pipe bomb, police told NBC 10. The state bomb squad and Middletown police were called to help and found a gun powder-type residue inside the device, police said. Police ran the device through an x-ray and determined there were no detonation parts. It was removed from the home.
