Newport Police: Rome Native Charged with Domestic Assault

arrested Bante Maria Boncompagni-Ludovist, 42, of Rome, Italy, charging him with domestic simple assault after he allegedly shoved his wife to the floor during an argument, something he said "happens all the time" in his native land.

Police received a call reporting a loud argument and a woman crying next door. After officers knocked on three doors, the alleged victim finally came to the door, reportedly with a large scratchon her right arm. She said her husband pushed her down during an argument, according to reports. She said she did not want him to go to jail; she just wanted the police to "scare him ... just to learn a lesson."

After first claiming an in ability to speak English, Boncompagni-Ludovist reportedly told officers the fight was "none of their business," that he was going back to Italy and that he is "not subject to your rules." After police took him into custody, the defendant told police they "would be arrested for putting him in handcuffs" in Italy.

Once at the Newport Police Station, the defendant told officers he was in pain. After a brief visit to Newport Hospital, he was returned to his cell.

Courtney L. Clegg, 27, of 22 Delano Island, Tiverton, was charged with larceny after allegedly stealing $51 in household goods from Wal-Mart.

Casey Austin Quarry, 28, of 7 Dearborn St., Newport, was charged with violating a no-contact order.
