Newport Ranks First In Hotel Revenue

Providence ranked second with more than $2.2 million, and Warwick came in third with $1.2 million.

NEWPORT, RI— Data from the Rhode Island Department of Revenue shows Newport topped the state in lodging tax revenue for the 2018 fiscal year. Newport collected $2.5 million in taxes from its hospitality industry.

Providence ranked second with more than $2.2 million, and Warwick came in third with $1.2 million.

Rhode Island has a 7 percent sales tax and a 6 percent lodging tax on visitors who stay in a hotel, timeshare, cottage or other short-term rental. Of the 6 percent, 1 percent goes to the city or town.

The data shows state revenue from the lodging tax totaled $21.53 million in 2018. That's almost $2 million more than the year before.
