Newport School Committee Approves Assistant Superintendent Contract
Former Pell Elementary School Principal Kimberly Behan was appointed to the post in August. The search is on for her replacement at Pell.
NEWPORT, RI—The Newport School Committee on Tuesday unanimously approved a $124,000 annual contract for a new assistant superintendent: Kimberly Behan, the former principal at Pell Elementary School.
With Behan no longer at the helm at Pell after a move to the central office, the School Committee is now moving ahead with the search for her replacement.
The 930-student elementary school currently has an assistant principal and an aspiring principal on staff, said Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain.

School Committee Member David Carlin supported the contract but expressed reservations, specifically about the nine weeks of vacation. He said the amount seems excessive for an administrator, but since all the other administrators get nine weeks, he felt it would be unfair not to approve her contract, he said.
Behan's base salary represents an increase over the former assistant superintendent's deal. Jennifer Booth's contract indicated she was to receive $116,732.88 for the period from Jan. 1 through June 30, 2016 and
$119,067.54 from July 1 on.

In a separate action, the board voted to advertise the principal's job.
