NEWPORT, RI — Your kids might not want to admit it, but the end of summer vacation is almost here, and the first day of school is coming up fast. As you enjoy your last weeks at the beach and start back-to-school shopping, here are five dates to know headed into the new school year.

  • First Day of School: September 5. Newport is one of the few Rhode Island schools to start class after Labor Day.
  • September 9: First full day of school for kindergartners.
  • Columbus Day: October 14, no school.
  • End of First Quarter: November 7, early release day.
  • Thanksgiving Recess: November 27 to 29. Wednesday is an early-release day, leading into a five-day weekend.
